Wild Harvest Network Coordinator Volunteer

Background information/context

If you have a passion for wild plants and the restaurant industry, join our wild foods partnership program. The Wild Harvest Network is Forager Foundation’s latest initiative focused on the promotion of wild edibles on the menus of local restaurants. Our program volunteers support the work of the program director by helping out with the the basic development and implementation of Forager’s new initiative, for example, wild plant culinary use research, seasonal calendar development, restaurant partner outreach, and community program awareness.

Opportunities are available from Monday to Friday only, at our Vancouver office. There are no weekend volunteering opportunities. Volunteers usually donate four to eight hours per week, Monday to Friday, normally starting between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and then finishing between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. We try to place volunteers according to their preferences.

Overall purpose of the volunteer role

  • Assisting Wild Harvest Network director with the basic development and implementation of Forager’s new initiative. 

Main tasks of the volunteer role

Tasks may include:

Research, restaurant outreach, social media, writing, and media outreach.

This role will suit volunteers with the following interests/qualities/experience

  •  An interest and enthusiasm for foraging and cooking
  • Some native plant knowledge
  • Some experience in the restaurant industry
  • Enjoy volunteering as part of a team
  • Ability to commit to a regular placement

Level of commitment/hours

For this role we are looking for volunteers who are willing/able to commit regularly to at least four hours per week on weekdays. Volunteers offered indefinite placements at Forager are encouraged to donate a minimum of twenty four volunteer days per year, inclusive of training/meeting time to be fully operational in a role.

Recruitment Procedure

Recruitment for this volunteer role is carried out when a number of placements become available – there is no set recruitment period during the year. Our aim is to find the right placement for each volunteer and to provide opportunities for a diverse range of people, so we do not recruit on a first come first served basis. We endeavour to place volunteers according to their preferences. During recruitment drives application forms held on file will be matched to the vacancy and those applicants whose availability and interests most closely match will be invited to Forager for an informal discussion. The purpose of the discussion is to explain in more detail the volunteering opportunities and to find out a bit more about why applicants would like to volunteer.
